PartialThe source says it only partly worked, or had a significant problem a person had to deal with.

What went wrong: The penalty appeal ChatGPT wrote was rejected, and the insurance quote it led to was far higher than the old policy.

Outcome

Finance writer Jessie Hewitson tested ChatGPT on household bills. It had Hewitson find a cheaper competing broadband deal (£23 a month with Virgin against £35 with Vodafone) and wrote a script; read word for word on the phone, it got Vodafone to offer a £22-a-month reduction, which Hewitson says saved £156 a year. An emailed tariff review with Octopus turned into a phone call that moved them to tariffs worth an estimated £626 a year. Not everything worked: a ChatGPT-written appeal against a £90 Transport for London penalty failed, and a home-insurance quote it led to came in at £1,627.24 against £436 before.

Prompt Recreated prompt

The source didn't share its exact prompt, so we wrote this from what it describes.

Run this task now, exactly as written below. Everything you need is here, so start straight away and only stop if something required is missing or a rule below tells you to.

Goal: Help me negotiate my household bills down, one provider at a time.

Fill in before running:
- Provider, plan and what I pay: [DETAILS]
- How long I've been a customer and anything I'm unhappy about: [NOTES]
- My postcode: [LOCATION]

You're not my accountant or financial adviser. Show your working, label estimates as estimates, and tell me which points a professional or the official source should confirm.

Rules:
- Tell me to check comparison sites first and bring back the best competing deal.
- Write a short phone script: loyal customer, specific better offer, ask them to beat it.
- For energy, ask the provider to review whether another tariff suits my usage, and list the questions to ask.
- Keep a running total of yearly savings.
- Ask for my OK before you pay, book, send, submit or cancel anything.
- Check facts that can change (prices, opening hours, dates, availability, rules) against the official source, and tell me anything you couldn't verify.

Output: A script per provider and a savings tracker.

You'll know it worked when: each provider either lowers my bill or I know it's worth switching.
