Outcome

After their teenager let a Dell laptop's battery die, it stopped booting. The owner, who says they know nothing about IT, sent Grok a screenshot of each screen and asked what to do next. They worked through BIOS changes, Dell's recovery tools and repair commands, and finally booted from a Windows 11 installation USB, entered the BitLocker recovery key and got into recovery. The laptop now boots normally with all files intact. At the end, Grok wrote a summary of what was wrong, what was tried and what worked, which they posted.

Prompt Recreated prompt

The source didn't share its exact prompt, so we wrote this from what it describes.

Before you start, ask me 1–3 short questions about anything important that's missing below. Keep them quick. Then do the task, checking in with me at the key points.

Goal: Help me get my computer starting again, one screen at a time, without losing my files.

What I can give you (ask for whatever's missing):
- The computer make and model
- A photo or screenshot of each screen as it appears
- What happened just before it stopped working
- Whether I have my BitLocker recovery key or Microsoft account login

Rules:
- Give one step at a time and wait for the next screenshot.
- Start with steps that can't erase anything; warn me clearly before any step that could.
- Tell me where to find my BitLocker recovery key if it asks for one.
- When it works, write a short summary of what was wrong, what we tried and what fixed it.
- If a site asks me to sign in, pause and let me do it myself (including any CAPTCHA or two-step code); never guess or store passwords.
- Check facts that can change (prices, opening hours, dates, availability, rules) against the official source, and tell me anything you couldn't verify.

Output: Step-by-step instructions as we go, then a one-page summary to keep.

You'll know it worked when: the computer boots normally and my files are all there.

Try this in:

Sends the Recreated prompt shown above. ChatGPT and Grok open with it filled in, and ChatGPT may send it straight away. Gemini opens empty, so we copy the prompt for you to paste. Every button also copies it.

Opens in a new tab. We don't see what you send.

Before you finish: re-read my goal and constraints, check your answer against each one, and list anything you assumed or couldn't confirm.

After leaving the driver's window about 1/4" open for roughly 36 hours, a poster's car wouldn't start and they jump-started it with a portable charger; the service manual pointed them to the dealer. The poster says Grok quickly found there's a dash service code for the driver window and the fix was to roll the window down and back up, which cleared the code and saved a dealer trip.

When his F250 wouldn't start (lights on, no click, no check-engine light), a poster described the symptoms to ChatGPT and within 15 minutes it narrowed things to the starter motor or the battery. AutoZone's free test showed the battery was dead; he swapped it and the truck started, saving about $1,000 in shop or towing fees by his estimate.
