Outcome

A shopper tested ChatGPT's Operator on Amazon returns. The first took about 15 minutes, with the shopper stepping in for login, CAPTCHAs and choices; the second ran autonomously in under a minute but gave a gift-card balance instead of a card refund. For a ~$100 rug past its return window, it needed repeated nudging to reach a human agent instead of messaging the seller and forgot earlier preferences, but in the end got the extension and the $100 back.

Prompt Recreated prompt

The source didn't share its exact prompt, so we wrote this from what it describes.

Run this task now, exactly as written below. Everything you need is here, so start straight away and only stop if something required is missing or a rule below tells you to.

Goal: Process my online returns and, where needed, ask customer service for a return extension.

Fill in before running:
- Store and items to return: [LIST]
- Refund method I want: [e.g. original card]
- Drop-off option I prefer: [LOCATION]
- For late items, why it's late: [REASON]

Rules:
- I'll log in and solve any CAPTCHA; pause and ask me.
- Confirm refund method and drop-off before submitting each return.
- For late returns, contact the store's own support (not a third-party seller) and ask for a human.
- Summarise each return with confirmation numbers.
- If a site asks for a login, a CAPTCHA or payment details, stop and hand control back to me.
- Ask for my OK before you pay, book, send, submit or cancel anything.
- Check facts that can change (prices, opening hours, dates, availability, rules) against the official source, and tell me anything you couldn't verify.

Output: Confirmed returns with refund method and drop-off details.

You'll know it worked when: each refund goes to the method I chose.

- Drop-off option I prefer: [LOCATION]
- For late items, why it's late: [REASON]

Rules:
- I'll log in and solve any CAPTCHA or two-step code; pause and ask me, and never guess or store passwords.
- Confirm refund method and drop-off before submitting each return.
- For late returns, contact the store's own support (not a third-party seller) and ask for a human.

- Ask for my OK before you pay, book, send, submit or cancel anything.
- Check facts that can change (prices, opening hours, dates, availability, rules) against the official source, and tell me anything you couldn't verify.
- Check the refund method on each confirmation; gift-card balances are hard to reverse.

Output: Confirmed returns with refund method and drop-off details.

You'll know it worked when: each refund goes to the method I chose.

Before you finish: re-read my goal and constraints, check your answer against each one, and list anything you assumed or couldn't confirm.

  • On a $500 eBay sale, an overseas buyer asked for a big partial refund, then said the box wasn't factory sealed and sent photos of a scratch. The seller asked ChatGPT what an experienced seller would do; it said don't argue, don't offer a discount, and tell the buyer to open a return through eBay. Because the order used eBay's international shipping program, eBay handled it: the buyer was refunded, the item wasn't returned, and the seller says he kept the money.

It hit a 503 error page every time and finally said network restrictions made interacting with Amazon impossible. Asked to buy the same treats at PetSmart, it navigated the store and the multi-step checkout with no problem.

  • Buy a work anniversary gift with ChatGPT agent (it abandoned three carts)Recreated promptEvidence: Described by posterPartial

A poster asked ChatGPT agent to buy a 4-year work anniversary gift on a $140 budget. It researched and compared well, but abandoned three carts without asking (account required, gift card not found, a form error), unticked marketing emails, made up a phone number that caused shipping issues, chose passwords and rewrote the gift message without consulting him. It finished on a site with guest checkout.
