Method:
How we verify

Evidence: Described by posterThe person describes what happened in words, without screenshots or video.

Context: Written on arrival; how the move went isn't reported.

Outcome

Needing to leave Canada, a poster and his partner gave ChatGPT a list of requirements: what they loved about Vancouver, economic viability, quality of life and more. It suggested a handful of options with Munich at the top, and they moved there with little German, having never spent more than 24 hours in the city.

Prompt Recreated prompt

The source didn't share its exact prompt, so we wrote this from what it describes.

Let's work this out together. I'll tell you what I know, you suggest options and ask what you need, and we'll narrow it down step by step. Nothing gets booked, bought or sent until I say so.

Goal: Let's shortlist places we could move to, based on what matters to us.

What I'll share as we go:
- What we love about where we live now
- Work situation and visa options
- Budget and cost-of-living limits
- Language, climate and lifestyle preferences

Rules:
- Suggest 3-5 places and explain how each meets our list.
- Flag visa or work-permit hurdles and link official immigration sites.
- Compare rough rent and living costs, with sources and dates.
- Note the biggest downside of each.
- If a site asks for a login, a CAPTCHA or payment details, stop and hand control back to me.
- Ask for my OK before you pay, book, send, submit or cancel anything.
- Check facts that can change (prices, opening hours, dates, availability, rules) against the official source, and tell me anything you couldn't verify.

Output: A shortlist with a comparison table and next steps to research.

You'll know it worked when: we have a shortlist we can test with a visit or deeper research.

Before you finish: re-read my goal and constraints, check your answer against each one, and list anything you assumed or couldn't confirm.

  • A product manager says a friend moving house used ChatGPT to rank areas by commute, local shops and safety before choosing a place, then Gemini to build a moving checklist and rough budget in Google Sheets, then ChatGPT image generation for interior design ideas. The friend, who doesn't work in tech, said it was easier than expected.

A Japanese note.com writer used ChatGPT to manage the many small, time-sensitive tasks of a move, starting with 'Summarize what I need to do for my move' and adding things as they came up, like using up the fridge. She says she did the procedures herself but barely had to think about what to do next.

  • Work out how much to save per paycheck for a cross-country move with ChatGPTRecreated promptEvidence: Article or interviewPartial

Mashable's writer asked ChatGPT how much she needed to save from each paycheck to move over 1,100 miles to Chicago, with rent of $1,000-$1,500 in mind. She says the math was spotty—unless the prompt specified July 1, 2024 it assumed other dates, and once it calculated 10 pay periods instead of the 7 she gave—but after tweaking it gave a number that matched her own math. Apartment-search GPTs were a worse experience than Googling.
