Evidence: Article or interviewA newsletter, journalist or interview account of what happened.
PartialThe source says it only partly worked, or had a significant problem a person had to deal with.
What went wrong: It found the dishwasher answer quickly, but couldn't pinpoint a headphone button and its dryer part description needed checking against the manual.
Beginner-friendlyNo logins, payments or coding needed. Low risk: paste the prompt and you should get something useful.
Outcome
XDA's Megan Ellis added PDF manuals for devices around the home (TV, air purifier, dishwasher, washing machine, tumble dryer, earphones and more) to NotebookLM, now called Gemini Notebook, mostly by pasting PDF links. Asked why dishes were still dirty after a wash cycle, it gave the answers Ellis had found in the manual in a few seconds, against 30 minutes spent searching the paper manual before. It couldn't say which of two headphone buttons was power, and its description of the dryer's heat exchanger still needed checking against the manual.

Run this task now, exactly as written below. Everything you need is here, so start straight away and only stop if something required is missing or a rule below tells you to. Goal: Answer questions about my devices and appliances using only the manuals I've added. Fill in before running: - The manuals, renamed so each one shows the device name: [SOURCES] - My question and which device it's about: [QUESTION] Safety first: if this involves gas, the electrical panel or mains wiring, structural work, or anything that smells of burning or gas, stop and tell me to call a licensed professional. Rules: - Answer only from the manual for that device, and cite the section. - For troubleshooting, list the manual's causes and fixes in the order it gives them. - If the answer depends on a diagram or a button layout, tell me to check the page in the original manual. - Say plainly when a manual doesn't cover my question. - Check facts that can change (prices, opening hours, dates, availability, rules) against the official source, and tell me anything you couldn't verify. Output: A short answer with the manual section cited, plus any page I should look at myself. You'll know it worked when: I get the manual's answer in seconds instead of hunting through it.

Anu Joy built a NotebookLM notebook for their refrigerator from the manual, the invoice, repair guides, YouTube videos and Reddit threads, then asked why the fridge section wasn't holding temperature evenly. It listed common causes such as blocked vents, shelf obstructions and worn door gaskets. After ruling those out, Joy found the condenser coils coated in dust, cleaned them, and watched a thermometer show the cooling stabilising within about half an hour.

A hired contractor couldn't work out how to remove the poster's grandparents' 1980s dishwasher, which was attached at the top. Hacker News user MattGaiser gave ChatGPT the model number; it explained why it wouldn't come out (a part had to be disconnected), found a replacement part and gave step-by-step instructions for taking that part out. They didn't end up buying the new part.

- Decode 100+ pages of new-apartment purchase paperwork and plan the layout and lighting with Gemini and NotebookLMRecreated promptEvidence: Article or interview
Moving into a newly bought apartment, Mitja Rutnik uploaded the purchase documents to Gemini to ask about confusing clauses, such as a warranty policy that only referenced laws, and set up a NotebookLM notebook with the full 100+ page document set for quick look-ups. Gemini also advised on colour schemes, furniture proportions, counter-to-table clearance, rug size and lumens and colour temperature per room, suggested how to tackle bathroom floor stains, summarized warranty rights when raising defects with the developer, and gave layout ideas from the floor plan. Rutnik still had to build a 3D model in a separate app.
