Outcome

With a house closing the next day and a move a month away, the Get On With It blogger asked Perplexity for an exhaustive, categorized, copyable checklist covering admin, address changes and tasks they might not think of, like checking the new furnace filter. Perplexity returned a checkable list split into pre-move, moving-day and post-move tasks, with cited sources.

Prompt Original prompt

Exact prompt as published in the source.

I am moving house in the next month. Currently my family and I are in a four bedroom rental property and we are moving to a five bedroom house in the same town that we are purchasing. We’re scheduled to close on the house tomorrow, and move in exactly a months time.
Can you make me an exhaustive list of everything that I need to do for my move? I know there are lots of administrative tasks like updating my accounts with my new address, however, there are probably a lot of tasks I’m not thinking about too. I just thought that I need to check the furnace in the new house to ensure it has a clean filter, to give an example. I’d like a list of actions that I should/might need to take organized by categorey and in a format that I can copy easily and check-off as I complete them.
Take your time and let me know what information you might need to make this list as complete as possible.

Our rewrite with extra checks. The poster didn't test it.

Let's work this out together. I'll tell you what I know, you suggest options and ask what you need, and we'll narrow it down step by step. Nothing gets booked, bought or sent until I say so.

Goal: Build a complete, checkable moving checklist for my situation, adding to it as I remember things.

What I'll share as we go:
- Where I'm moving from and to, and whether I rent or own each place
- Move date and key dates (closing, lease end)
- Who's moving (kids, pets) and anything special (piano, home office)
- Things I've already done

Rules:
- Organize by phase: before the move, moving week, moving day, first week, first month.
- Within each phase, group by category: admin and address changes, utilities, packing, cleaning, new-home maintenance.
- Include easy-to-forget items (furnace filter, smoke alarms, changing locks, voter registration, pet microchip).
- Use [ ] checkboxes so I can copy it into my notes app.
- Check facts that can change (prices, opening hours, dates, availability, rules) against the official source, and tell me anything you couldn't verify.
- Ask me 3 questions at the end that would make the list more complete.

Output: A copy-ready checklist with dates next to time-sensitive items.

You'll know it worked when: I can paste it straight into my notes and nothing obvious is missing.

Before you finish: re-read my goal and constraints, check your answer against each one, and list anything you assumed or couldn't confirm.

  • Keep a move on track with a running ChatGPT to-do listEvidence: Described by posterBeginner-friendly

A Japanese note.com writer used ChatGPT to manage the many small, time-sensitive tasks of a move, starting with 'Summarize what I need to do for my move' and adding things as they came up, like using up the fridge. She says she did the procedures herself but barely had to think about what to do next.
